The recent addition of two new MOTOMed Layson Leg Trainers for the Vartry Dialysis Unit has resulted in all patients being offered intradialytic exercise. This equipment helps to improve fitness and strength, thereby reducing the burden of frailty in Renal Dialysis patients. Currently 62.5% of all dialysis patients on the service are engaged with intradialytic exercise.
A recent review of service has the following objective improvements:
•Lower limb strength, measured by the 60-second sit-to-stand improved by 14%.
•Upper limb strength had a 30% improvement, as measured by the 30-second arm-curl test.
•Dominant hand grip strength measured by a hand dynamometer improved by 10%.
•The SARC-F, a Sarcopenia screening tool, had an overall 15% improvement in scores
•28% improvement in physical activity levels, with 59% of participating patients achieving the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week, compared to 31% prior to the development of the programme.
•19% reduction in number of falls.
Staff at the unit are pleased with the new MOTOmeds, which have been in use over the last number of months. This extra equipment has made a big difference to patients being treated on the unit.
“The objective was to purchase new MOTOmeds in order to further expand our intra-dialytic exercise programme, so that more patients can access our exercise programme and achieve positive functional outcomes. This has been put in place and achieved. The Physiotherapy department is grateful for the support received and the acknowledged benefit in patient care with physiotherapy involvement.”
