This project from the Anaesthesiology Department was awarded funding of €8,000 from TUHF as part of our Ignite for Impact initiative. The aim of the project was to build an all-in-one mobile wireless ultrasound system, procedure work platform and adjustable viewing screen with incorporated equipment storage was funded by the Ignite for Impact initiative. This new mobile station, with a wireless ultrasound probe with charger and wireless tablet, was delivered in October 2025.
Dr Patrick Conroy,Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine Consultant, explained: “We used the funds allocated to purchase a wireless ultrasound probe with charger. We were also able to purchase a wireless tablet which connects to the probe to display images. In addition, the funding allowed us to purchase and configure a mobile station which acts to both store all the necessary equipment to perform the block including the ultrasound system) but also has an integrated work platform for equipment used to perform the block procedure itself. The local bioengineering department also commissioned the whole setup by constructing a mobile arm to the workstation which makes block performance much more ergonomic as the ultrasound screen can be moved to any angle while also allowing it reach in over the bed to be closer to the operator.”
The project was implemented at the Reeves Day Surgery center (RDSC). The Reeves Day Surgery Centre at Tallaght University Hospital operates four day-surgery theatres. There is a “Block Bay” at the centre which serves as area in the theatre complex where patients can undergo a nerve block, performed by an anaesthesiologist, in advance of being moved into their designated theatre where they will undergo surgery.
“There are many advantages to running a block bay, most notably in terms of improving efficiency and patient flow through the theatre complex. In order to successfully run a block bay at RDSC this mobile dedicated ultrasound machine will allow the performance of regional anaesthesia blocks by the anaesthesiologist assigned to the bay.”
According to Dr Conroy the new mobile system “greatly reduces” time spent looking for and gathering the required ultrasound system, procedure equipment, and the procedure consumables as they all now reside on a single ergonomic mobile workstation.
