This innovative project from the Speech & Language Department was awarded funding of €40,000 from TUHF as part of our Ignite for Impact initiative. The main objective of the project was to implement the use of Phagenyx® to treat severe swallowing difficulties in patients in Critical Care and for patients post Stroke by providing electrical stimulation to the inside of the throat.
The project was led by Julie Keane, Sarah Rowland and Aisling Davitt, SLT Department, who reported positive outcomes for patients involved. The team noted that patients were able to commence oral intake sooner, the treatment reduced length of stay in ICU & the need for tube feeding. Nine patients have completed full treatment including both stroke and Critical Care patients.
Some of the challenges faced by clinicians included the nasogastric (NG) catheters becoming dislodged. Because of this finding, the team implemented NG bridals used as standard where possible and sent a memo to all relevant stakeholders to advise of the importance of not removing catheter pre-treatment finishes.
Due to the significant cost of the equipment required for this treatment it would not have been possible to implement this innovative treatment for patients without the funding grant. TUH is the first Critical Care Unit in Ireland to use this treatment which patients described as making a “life changing difference”.
“The highlight of this project for clinicians is seeing the significant improvement in patient’s swallowing ability within a short timeframe and being able to inform them that they are able to eat and drink safely again!”
